South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, has firmly denied allegations claiming he received illicit funds from Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a businessman currently under scrutiny for multiple corruption-related investigations. The allegations surfaced in media reports linking Matlala to questionable procurement deals involving state departments.
Mchunu called the accusations “baseless and politically motivated,” insisting he has never engaged in any financial dealings with Matlala. His office stated that the minister has always upheld transparency and ethical conduct throughout his public service career.
The controversy erupted after leaked documents suggested Matlala may have attempted to influence high-level officials through financial contributions. However, investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of the documents, and no formal charges have been laid against Mchunu.
Opposition parties have called for an independent inquiry to clear the air. They argue that all allegations involving public sector procurement must be thoroughly investigated to maintain trust in government institutions.
Meanwhile, legal experts warn that false allegations can have long-term political consequences, especially in a pre-election climate where misinformation spreads rapidly.
