NEW YORK — The UN General Assembly has approved a debate requested by Cuba to address the impact of the United States blockade against the island.
Cuba submitted the request to bring the issue before the full Assembly, seeking international discussion on the humanitarian and economic consequences of more than six decades of sanctions.
Member states are expected to debate the matter in the coming sessions, with many countries anticipated to reaffirm calls for an end to the unilateral measures.
Cuba has consistently argued that the blockade violates international law and obstructs access to food, medicine, and development. The US maintains its policy, while the majority of UN members vote annually in favor of lifting it.
The approval of the debate underscores continued global attention on the issue at the United Nations.
