A World Food Programme (WFP) convoy delivering emergency aid to North Kordofan came under fire on Monday, further complicating relief operations in an area already suffering from food shortages and ongoing conflict. The attack occurred near the town of Barah, where unidentified armed men ambushed the convoy of trucks carrying essential supplies for displaced families.
According to WFP officials, drivers were forced to halt as gunmen opened fire, damaging vehicles and forcing staff to take cover. No casualties were reported, but several tons of food destined for vulnerable communities were lost or destroyed.
The attack marks the third major incident targeting humanitarian operations in Sudan in the past month. Aid groups say worsening insecurity has made it nearly impossible to reach millions of people trapped between frontlines. The WFP warned that if attacks continue, it may be forced to suspend deliveries to high-risk zones.
North Kordofan has seen increased clashes between rival military factions seeking control of strategic supply routes. Civilians in the region face acute food shortages, with many surviving on a single meal per day. Aid workers say humanitarian shipments are now a lifeline—and attacks on convoys amount to an assault on the civilian population itself.
International organizations have urged Sudan’s warring parties to guarantee the safety of humanitarian personnel and allow unrestricted access. But with both sides accusing each other of violating ceasefires, the security environment remains extremely volatile.
