HARARE — Friends of Cuba in Zimbabwe have delivered critical backup power equipment to a hospital in Havana, a gesture of solidarity aimed at helping Cuban medical staff withstand the impact of the United States blockade.
The donation was made through the “We Must Love Cuba” Project. Funds were raised by Cuban graduates, Cuban residents in Zimbabwe, members of the Cuban Embassy, and Cuban health and education collaborators working in the southern African nation.
According to a statement from the Cuban Embassy, the equipment will be installed at the operating room of the Institute of Gastroenterology in Havana. Officials said the backup power system will allow surgeries and critical procedures to continue despite frequent power disruptions caused by fuel shortages linked to the blockade.
“We are grateful for the donation made by friends of Cuba in Zimbabwe,” the Embassy said, noting that the support reflects decades of cooperation between the two countries in health and education.
Cuba has faced intensified economic pressure under the US embargo, which has restricted access to fuel, medical supplies, and equipment for more than 60 years. Cuban medical brigades have in turn provided services in Zimbabwe for years, particularly in rural clinics.
The Institute of Gastroenterology is one of Havana’s key referral hospitals, treating patients from across the island for digestive and surgical conditions.
The “We Must Love Cuba” campaign continues to mobilize resources across Africa to support Cuban health institutions affected by the blockade.
