HAVANA — The President of Cuba has congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and the Prosperity Party on their electoral victory, while reaffirming its commitment to deepen historic bilateral relations.

“Congratulations to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali and the Prosperity Party on their electoral victory,” the statement said. “We reaffirm the determination to continue strengthening the historic relations of brotherhood and cooperation that unite our peoples and Governments.”

Relations since 18 July 1975
Cuba and Ethiopia established diplomatic relations on 18 July 1975. The two countries have since maintained fraternal cooperation across several sectors, with health and education as the main pillars.

Officials from the Embassy of Cuba in Ethiopia said Cuba continues to award scholarships in Medicine to Ethiopian students even under current global conditions.

Cultural bridge and new cooperation areas
A key pillar of the cultural relationship is the community of “Ethio-Cubans” — Ethiopians who studied in Cuba in the 1970s. They returned speaking fluent Spanish, with Cuban customs blended into Ethiopian traditions, and now serve as a linguistic and cultural link between the nations.

Looking forward, both governments identified opportunities to expand cooperation into biotechnological products and the sugar cane sector, alongside existing collaboration in health and education.

Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party secured victory in the country’s most recent elections, with Prime Minister Abiy set to continue leading the government.
